How Many Dog Skin Allergies Can Our Pets Get?

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Usually allergies that affect our dogs are due to totally wrong or incorrect food habits. Due to some of these food allergies, dogs will have some sort of itching and scratching on their entire body. These food allergies can also be difficult to isolate for our pets. “Flea bite allergies”, which are caused by the insects our pets come into contact with and “inhalant allergies” are just some of the many allergies that can harm our dogs.

Usually allergies that are dog specific are caused only by the wrong intake of food. Usually dogs that are affected by the food they eat are especially allergic to some particular agents used in the preparation of their food. These agents can cause some complications throughout the intestinal tracks in dogs and may require antibodies.

Even though food allergies are common to all animals, dogs will be complaining by the age from 5 months to 12 years or even older. Most of the dogs that will be commonly affected by food allergies seem to be between the age of 2 to 6 years. This could be due to changing diets during these years. On taking beef products, chicken, mutton pieces, fish, eggs, corn, wheat which are some of the edible items our dogs will be affected by and may even have complications through severe food allergies to these products.

The first symptoms of food allergy that usually appear are slight itching on the pets skin. Then gradually it will start to spread all over to the face, feet, ears, legs and the area around the hind quarters. There is an ear infection that is sometimes also possible. They can be treated completely by starting a long course of antibiotics only. Some times these symptoms that are caused can be seen in bowel movements of the dog. So in order to prevent pets from such infections, almost certainly we should give them only home made diets even though this is improbable in today’s climate.

If they are affected with food allergies, sometimes a minimum of 10 to 12 week’s treatment is needed for them as per a physician advice. We should avoid giving them commercial diets which available in the markets during this treatment. If any problems appear with the dogs, they should further be treated carefully under the diagnosis from the Vet of and about food allergies. Still a very suitable diet for dogs is protein and carbohydrates enriched foods. This type of food is called “limited antigen” diets. They should be given to the dogs in molecule sizes to ease digestion.

Do You Know Why Our Pets Cough and Sneeze Just Like Us?

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Because our pets are more like us than most of us know it is not surprising that they also get allergies just like we do. We keep them in our homes and make them part of our families, as they should be. The temperature inside the house may be controlled and whenever our pet is taken outside it may have to adjust to the different temperature as we do and this could cause an allergic reaction or even a cold.

Spoiling our pet might be the only way we think we should look after them but if we place them in an unhealthy environment where an allergy may be triggered is not healthy for them. Care about what may trigger an allergic reaction could save you and your pet many days of misery or even large Vet bills. Most pets are very hardy so it could be a good idea to check with your local club or veterinarian about local hazards that could possibly be of concern to your pet or at the very least cause them to show signs of an allergy that mau have been avoided.
